Congressman Danny K. Davis holds Town Hall meetings on Healthcare Reform
Chicago, Illinois – Congressman Danny K. Davis (IL-7) held the first of several Town Hall meetings to discuss reforming our nation’s healthcare system with his constituents. The meeting was held on May 11, 2009 at Northwestern Memorial Hospital on campus of Feinberg School of Medicine. Congressman Davis is in unique position to provide leadership on health care reform. His district includes 4 medical schools and 21 hospitals as well as the American Medical Association, American Osteopathic Association, Chicago Medical Society, and Illinois Psychiatric Society and numerous other healthcare associations. more

Congress passes Wellstone-Domenici Mental Health Parity and Addiction Equity Act of 2008

Senate Committee Approves Addition of Eating Disorders to List of Mental Illnesses Covered by Illinois Parity Bill
Chicago, Illinois - The Illinois Psychiatric Society (IPS), a state association of the American Psychiatric Association (APA), applauds Rep. Fred Crespo and Senator John Cullerton for the recent passage of the Eating Disorder Parity bill, HB 1432, from the Senate Insurance Committee by a vote of 9-0. The Illinois Psychiatric Society would like to thank all of the members of the Committee as well for their recognition of the importance of this bill. HB 1432 will ensure parity for all mental illnesses by adding eating disorders to the list of disorders that must be covered by insurers. Eating disorders are serious illnesses and affect several million people at any given time. “These illnesses, particularly anorexia nervosa, are killers,” said Dr. Sheldon Miller, president of the Illinois Psychiatric Society. “This is not something we can take very lightly. There’s a very high death rate, and there’s a high probability of failure to treat, resulting in some very bad things happening to people.” more

Second Chance Act Improves Mental Health Services for Prisoners

Illinois Psychiatric Society Offers Condolences to Family and Friends of Shooting Victims
Chicago, Illinois - The Illinois Psychiatric Society (IPS), a state association of the American Psychiatric Association (APA), expresses its deepest sympathies to the families, friends and peers of the victims of the shocking university shooting tragedy at Northern Illinois University.
This type of trauma can have tremendous psychological impact on those affected. Individuals may have various stress reactions that present psychological, as well as physical symptoms. The causes behind such incidents are often complex, and there are usually no simple answers. more
