Highlights of the IPS Annual Meeting

By: Jasleen Singh, MD

This year IPS held another successful annual meeting! With even higher registration and attendance than last year, the 2025 Annual Meeting on Resilience, Renewal, and Revitalization: Cultivating Well-Being During Times of Change brought together trainees, early career psychiatrists, seasoned psychiatrists, and family members for a wonderful event.

Even before the event started, several IPS leadership, exhibitors, and trainees assembled early in the morning to start preparing for the big day! Over 20 trainees presented at the poster competition this year, spurring a new record and giving the judges quite a tough job! Multiple IPS members volunteered to serve as judges this year for the two categories of posters: case reports and research. Poster presenters included medical students, residents, and fellows who were all given 8 minutes to discuss their poster and answer the judges questions, with a 2 minute interval in between each round for judges to convene. Having had the privilege to serve as a judge again this year, I was impressed by the variety of posters, efforts and preparation that went into the presentations, and the work that the trainees are doing overall! The passion, enthusiasm, and dedication of these emerging generations of psychiatrists are paving the way forward.

As folks trickled in to check-in, take a peek at the posters, and visit the exhibitor booths, you could feel the excitement in the air. It's always so wonderful to have opportunities for in-person gatherings to complement the various virtual events that IPS holds. Attendees gathered in the meeting room and Dr. Adrienne Adams, IPS President, gave a warm welcome, delivered opening remarks, and started off the educational sessions. For more details on the educational sessions in this year's annual meeting, please read Dr. Choi's in this issue of the newsletter.

After the first two educational sessions, attendees took a short break with snacks and an opportunity to explore the posters and network with each other, and the hour flew by! Before we knew it, it was time for the final session of the afternoon and then again there was time to network with exhibitors and mingle with attendees.

As the evening rolled in, additional members, including families and friends, arrived for the awards dinner. Dr. Adams gave a brief presidential address as part of the business meeting, highlighting the important theme of this year's meeting, the work of the planning committee in putting together IPS events, thanking this year's sponsors, providing an overview of some recent and ongoing IPS initiatives during her presidency, and introducing Mercy Home as the chosen president's charity for the year.

Subsequently, IPS Lobbyist Mark Peysakhovich provided a legislative update and discussed some of the important advocacy work that IPS has been working towards including updates this year. He also highlighted the efforts of the GAC committee, in reviewing bills and meeting with legislators, amongst their other advocacy work. At the very end of his talk, he challenged attendees to name their current state representative and senator, which proved challenging for many and showed how much room for learning and advocacy there is still left.

The remainder of the night was filled with presentations of this year's Carl Bell Essay competition winner, the winners for the poster sessions, and the 2025 IPS member awards.

Of course, in the midst of all of these events throughout the day were the memories being made, the bonds being forged and strengthened, and the opportunity for togetherness. A special thank you to Dr. Sudhakar Shenoy and Dr. Roxanna De La Torre for their generous time in helping capture some of these precious moments.
