Summary: In an interactive presentation, Dr. Anzia will illustrate core principles of mentorship through selected stories from her longtime roles as a psychiatry residency director, a physician health liaison in a large academic medical center, and in leadership roles in medical education. Attendees will be encouraged to share their own stories of effective (and ineffective!) mentorship to create a lively and supportive group learning experience.
Meet our Guest Speaker:
Joan M. Anzia, M.D, DLFAPA
Joan M. Anzia, M.D. is Professor Emerita of Psychiatry and Behavioral sciences at the Feinberg School of Medicine/Northwestern University; from 2006 until 2022 she served as Vice Chair of Education for the Department of Psychiatry and the Physician Health Liaison/Wellness Officer for Northwestern Memorial Hospital and Lurie Children’s Hospital. Dr. Anzia is a career medical educator who is a member of the inaugural class of the Feinberg Academy of Medical Educators, or FAME. Dr. Jordan Romero - will cover things I wish I'd known and questions I wish I'd asked prior to accepting my first position as an outpatient, private-practice attending.
Jordan Romero, M.D. is a board-certified General Adult Psychiatrist who received his medical degree from LSU School of Medicine in New Orleans. He completed his General Psychiatry residency at Eastern Virginia Medical School. His clinical interests include psychopharmacology and psychotherapy of anxiety disorders, depressive disorders, bipolar disorders, and substance abuse disorders. Dr. Romero is available for initial evaluations, second opinion consultations, as well as ongoing medication management and psychotherapy of adult patients.
Dr. Joseph Willuweit - will discuss 3-5 specific contract provisions that attendees should be specifically attuned to (e.g. restrictive covenants, early termination, indemnity, incentive-based comp). With any remaining time and in the Q&A, he will discuss general approach to employment negotiations, and in particular why it is important to give contract review/negotiation the appropriate time and attention – that the “legal stuff” (which may not seem like a priority) can have significant impact on a physician’s day-to-day and overall satisfaction in the position.
Mr. Willuweit concentrates his practice in mental health law and confidentiality, risk management, health care law, professional licensure, and guardianship and probate matters. Prior to Monahan Law Group, Mr. Willuweit completed internships in the general counsel's office at both a Chicago-based hospital and a national healthcare professional association, in addition to the city of Chicago. Further, he volunteered at the Pro Se Adult Guardianship Help Desk for the Cook County Circuit Court. Mr. Willuweit received his J.D. from Loyola University Chicago School of Law, where he served as Senior Editor of the Annals of Health Law and was involved with the Beazley Institute for Health Law and Policy including planning and coordinating the 2015 Access to Health Field Study in McAllen, Texas. He received his undergraduate degrees from Loyola University Chicago where he graduated from the Interdisciplinary Honors Program and was active in the Alpha Phi Omega Service Fraternity.

2024 IPS Annual Meeting:
Extending Our Reach: Building the Psychiatry Workforce of the Future
Saturday, October 5
Holiday Inn Countryside
6201 Joliet Road, Countryside, IL 60525
ABOUT:
Psychiatrists have been in short supply for as long as most of us can recall. Even prior to the pandemic, workforce projections estimated that we would likely still be functioning at a deficit by the year 2050. Yet, the pandemic only heightened the need for psychiatric care. How then, do we extend our reach as psychiatrists to ensure quality mental health care for a population with growing needs?
Join us at the IPS Annual Meeting as we focus on Extending Our Reach: Building the Psychiatry Workforce of the Future. We’ll learn together about mental health expansion efforts through the Illinois Behavioral Health Workforce Center, how to best partner with advanced practice providers so that psychiatrists and APPs are both practicing at the top of their scope and providing quality patient care, and what it means to be a general psychiatrist in the current practice environment.
We’ll also be hosting our annual poster competition and Awards Dinner, We will welcome both our keynote speaker, APA President, Dr. Ramaswamy Viswanathan who will open the meeting, and APA President-Elect, Dr. Theresa Miskimen Rivera who will speak at our awards dinner. We’ll be recognizing our outstanding members, as well as the second annual recipient of the Carl C. Bell Award. Come socialize with your fellow members as we all learn together and celebrate the accomplishments of our organization and our members!

What If We Trained All General Psychiatrists to Be General Psychiatrists? Shaping Education for Public Health Needs
Adam M. Brenner, M.D.
Editor-in-Chief, Academic Psychiatry; Professor of Psychiatry and Distinguished Teaching Professor; Vice Chair for
Education and Residency Training Director in Psychiatry; University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center
About this session: In the face of surging public mental health challenges, we should rethink the identity and training of
general psychiatrists.
4:30 - 5:30 pm Session 3:
In the Same Sandbox: Effective Working Relationships with PAs and ARNPs
Rebecca Lundquist, MD, DFAPA
Program Director of the Broadlawns-UnityPoint Psychiatry Residency
About this session: Despite many new psychiatry residencies and multiple new medical schools opening in the last few years with more to
come, it has become clear that there will not be enough psychiatrists in the U.S. to serve the needs of our population in any of our lifetimes. The
PA and NP roles were designed decades ago to be utilized very differently than we use them today. It is time to begin to have crucial
conversations about both the volumes of care needed as well as quality and safety of care provided.
