Reflections from Rising Medical Student Committee Chairs
By: Tomas Stavskis and Jacob Schuman, Medical Students
Greetings from the new co-chairs of the IPS – Medical Student Committee! Jacob Schuman is a 4th year medical student at Chicago Medical School - Rosalind Franklin University. Tomas Stavskis is a 3rd year osteopathic medical student at Chicago College of Osteopathic Medicine – Midwestern University.
We are excited to lead the Medical Student Committee in continuing to engage the medical students of Illinois with our monthly meetings. This summer we are planning an event to support 4th year medical students applying for psychiatry residency. Other meetings geared towards all years of medical students will include a presentation on what IPS is, including how to get involved, along with a presentation on how medical students can get involved in research.
Our mission is multifaceted:
To provide Illinois’ medical students interested in psychiatry with opportunities to meet students from other medical schools, as well as residents, fellows, and physicians in the field of psychiatry.
To inspire Illinois’ medical students to pursue a career in psychiatry through stories shared by psychiatrists and other mental healthcare professionals.
To share views on the ever-evolving field of psychiatry not only in current times but also how it may change in the future.
To equip medical students with the skills and confidence to match into a psychiatry residency in Illinois.
To increase IPS membership of medical students and involve them in IPS advocacy and community outreach events.
We look forward to meeting you all at the IPS Annual Meeting and to work together to accomplish the goals of the Medical Student Committee and IPS overall.
