Representing APA Leadership in Dialogue with ABPN: Advancing the Future of Psychiatry Together

By: Sudhakar Shenoy, MD

It was an honor to represent the American Psychiatric Association (APA) at a recent leadership meeting with the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology (ABPN), where I joined colleagues in thoughtful dialogue on the evolving needs and opportunities within our field.

As the APA Representative of the Board of Trustees, I had the privilege of contributing an early career psychiatrist perspective to wide-ranging discussions covering workforce challenges, the implications of AI and emerging technologies, and the importance of aligning education, training, and certification with real-world clinical needs.

The APA was well-represented by an esteemed delegation, including:

  • Theresa Miskimen Rivera, MD, APA President

  • Valerie Arnold, MD, APA Member Representative

  • Evan Eyler, MD, APA Assembly Speaker

  • Ramaswamy Viswanathan, MD, APA Past President

  • Sudhakar Shenoy, MD, APA Board of Trustees Representative

APA senior staff also joined the meeting:

  • Marketa Wills, MD, APA CEO and Medical Director

  • Vishal Madaan, MD, Chief, Division of Education and Deputy Medical Director

  • Nitin Gogtay, MD, Chief, Division of Research and Deputy Medical Director

What was most inspiring was witnessing the shared commitment between APA and ABPN to ensure that certification, education, and policy efforts are not only aligned but also adaptive to the rapidly changing landscape of psychiatric care. By working together and when our institutions come together with a unified vision, the result is stronger support for psychiatrists and improved outcomes for the patients and communities we serve.
